These collages are old-school, cut-and-paste analogue collages that have been primarily taken from my own photographic images, printed out, cut up, and then rearranged into new forms. I find that I vastly prefer this old method with its edges showing the marks of the scissors and the almost 3D aspect that it develops from the overlapping of the paper, to the literal seamlessness of digital collages.
These collages here are concerned with the movement from innocence to decay, the desire for rescue and miracle, and can be viewed as echoes of the oddity of human existence.
The Delta is located at the confluence of the Sacramento and the San Joaquin rivers. Starting in the 1800s, earthen levees were built to reduce flooding and to create farm land for the development of the agricultural industry in California. These levees are fragile and very vulnerable to the effects of subsidence, climate change, violent storms, and earthquakes.
High Pressure System is s series of ocean scenes shot from the balcony of my house in Southern California. The peculiar weather condition, locally called “Santa Anas,” creates high pressure with exceptionally clear, dry air that hyper-saturates the evening colors.
In homage to Hokusai’s “36 View of Mt. Fuji,” these images are differing views of the destruction of the old bridge and the raising of the New Bridge that now spans the Long Beach Harbor.
Northeast of Albion, Montana, on June 28, 2018, we were confronted by eight tornadoes.
The photographs on this page are taken from a larger series called Fighting Fire. This series stems from visits over a number of years to Oahu’s underground fire dancing sites.
